Virtual productions for Lapland – a virtual studio for AV, art and tourism companies
Virtual Productions for Lapland (VTLappi) is a two-year project (2026–2027) that develops and pilots virtual productions together with tourism, performing arts and audiovisual companies in Lapland. The project strengthens regional expertise in cutting-edge studio technologies and creates new business opportunities in the tourism, culture and audiovisual sectors.
Virtual Productions for Lapland brings virtual production technologies, such as LED wall studios, real-time game engines, and motion capture, into practical use with local companies in Lapland. The project supports companies in experimenting with new kinds of digital content and immersive experiences without requiring large initial investments.
The project is implemented by Lapland University of Applied Sciences and the University of Lapland in close cooperation with regional companies and stakeholders. Together, they are building a sustainable foundation for virtual production know-how and services in Northern Finland.
Objectives and activities
The main objective of the project is to increase the awareness and competence of Lapland-based companies in virtual production and to enable them to develop new products, services, and content using virtual studio technologies. Another key objective is to strengthen long-term collaboration between companies, Lapland University of Applied Sciences, and the University of Lapland.
In total, the project will organize three workshops and one seminar, providing companies with hands-on opportunities to experiment with virtual production tools. Selected companies will also take part in three demo/prototype productions and create three larger virtual productions, supported by De Minimis funding. During these productions, new concepts, campaigns, and storytelling formats will be developed and tested in the virtual studio environment, for example.
For companies: ways to participate
The project is targeted especially at companies in the tourism, performing arts, and audiovisual sectors in Lapland. Participation is suitable for both companies taking their first steps in virtual production and those that already have some experience.
Companies can participate in information sessions, workshops, and tailored trial periods in the studio, which the project organizes. In addition, three selected partners will be involved in co-creating concrete demo/prototype productions, such as marketing materials, artistic performances, or other digital experiences produced with virtual production technologies. In larger virtual production implementations, three companies participate in the project activities utilizing De Minimis support.

Virtual production studio and partners
The project makes use of the first virtual production studio in Lapland, located at the University of Lapland. The studio combines a LED wall, camera systems, motion capture, and real-time game engine-based environments to enable high-quality virtual productions for different sectors.
Lapland University of Applied Sciences leads the project implementation through its FrostBit Lab, which specializes in immersive technologies, game engines, and digital solutions. The University of Lapland participates through its Faculty of Art and Design and Education (Media Education Hub), bringing expertise in design, storytelling, pedagogy, and media production.
VPST project
The project continues and deepens the work started in earlier investments in Virtual Production Studio Technologies in Lapland (VPST), with a stronger focus on business collaboration and practical use cases.
